Residents in Wuhan took to the streets on Sunday, Sept. 4, to protest against ongoing Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown restrictions. Wuhan imposed a new set of COVID-19 restrictions on itself and the surrounding regions after an increase in asymptomatic cases in late August.
The protests occurred in Panlongcheng, an economic development zone with over 250,000 residents on the northwestern edge of Wuhan, where people have been under lockdown since Aug. 26. (Related: China’s draconian zero-COVID policy leading people to SUICIDE.)
Residents were not allowed to leave their homes, public transportation services were shut down and all public venues were closed except for supermarkets and government-designated healthcare institutions.
Video footage circulating on Chinese social media networks and obtained by Western news outlets shows residents from three residential compounds gathering in one place in Panlongcheng to hold a peaceful protest. They were chanting: “We demand the lifting of lockdown!” and “We want to have food! We need to pay loans! We have our family to feed!”
A source told the Chinese-language edition of the Epoch Times that the protest had over 2,000 attendees.
“We want to get back to work because we must pay off mortgages and car loans; we must provide for our children and take care of our parents,” noted a local resident who spoke under the pseudonym Zhang Qing. “The pandemic will not kill people, but the difficulties of life will.”
Zhang added she and many others like him are worried that the neighborhood and municipal lockdowns will cost them their jobs, as some businesses in regions that have not been shut down are carrying on with normal operations.
“My company resumed normal operation last night, but I am still locked at home,” said Zhang. “I haven’t been to work for more than 10 days now. Which boss will pay you for not working for such a long time?”
Panlongcheng is not the only place in China currently under lockdown. Over 65 million people in 33 cities, including seven provincial capitals, are under full or partial lockdown.
Chinese-language magazine Caixin reported that outbreaks have been reported in 103 cities, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020. Despite the number of outbreaks, very few infections have actually been reported.
Regardless, communist authorities are adhering to the Chinese Communist Party’s “zero-COVID” policy requiring lockdowns, quarantine and isolation and forced COVID-19 PCR testing for people suspected of being in close contact with any confirmed case.
China’s National Health Commission reported 1,552 new cases in the last 24 hours on Monday, Sept. 5.
In the eastern port city of Tianjin with nearly 14 million residents, students were forced to go back to online learning after just 14 new cases were discovered, with all but two being asymptomatic.
In the southwestern city of Chengdu, approximately 21 million residents were confined to their apartments or residential complexes. About one million of the city’s residents were taken out of lockdown recently, and municipal authorities ordered three more rounds of mass COVID-19 testing until Wednesday, Sept. 7. Schools were also closed down in Chengdu.
The lockdown situation in the sprawling city led to a massive outcry following a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that killed 65 people. Despite the natural disaster, COVID-19 measures were not lifted or even temporarily suspended to allow people to head to safety.
Apartment buildings where at least one resident tested positive for COVID-19 are designated as “sealed areas,” where residents are forbidden from setting foot outside their homes regardless of whether or not they are infected.
Videos shared on Chinese social media networks show panicked residents being prevented by chained gates from leaving the building following the earthquake.
Lu Siwei, a lawyer in Chengdu, reported that he ran out of his 30-floor building after feeling the earthquake, only to be trapped with his panicked neighbors behind locked gates.
“Which one is more important? The lockdown or the earthquake? said Lu.
