Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has allegedly made an agreement with President-elect Donald Trump and his team to combat illegal border crossings and drug trafficking in exchange for a better deal on future tariffs against Canada.
In November, Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he would “sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 percent tariff on all products coming into the United States and its ridiculous open borders” once he takes office on Jan. 20, 2025. (Related: REPORT: Tariffs during Trump’s first term would help U.S. decouple from China.)
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump added. “Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”
Just days after the announcement, Trudeau was seen dining with Trump along with several other individuals, including Big Tech billionaire Elon Musk, Senator-elect David McCormick (R-PA) and his wife, former Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and his wife, Secretary of Commerce nominee Howard Lutnick and his wife and National Security Adviser-designate Mike Waltz and his wife.
Accompanying Trudeau were Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanch and his Chief of Staff Katie Telford.
The meeting, held at Mar-a-Lago on Nov. 30, focused on fostering cooperation to tackle pressing cross-border issues, including the fentanyl epidemic and trade disparities. Trump confirmed their meeting in another post on his Truth Social account and called it “very productive.”
“I just had a very productive meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, where we discussed many important topics that will require both Countries to work together to address, like the Fentanyl and Drug Crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of Illegal Immigration, Fair Trade Deals that do not jeopardize American Workers and the massive Trade Deficit the U.S. has with Canada,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
“I made it very clear that the United States will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic, caused mainly by the Drug Cartels, and Fentanyl pouring in from China. Too much death and hardship!” he added. “Prime Minister Trudeau has made a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation of U.S. Families. We also spoke about many other important topics like Energy, Trade and the Arctic. All are vital issues that I will be addressing on my first days back in Office and before.”
The meeting came after Trudeau spoke against tariffs. In an interview on Nov. 29 at the Canadian Maritime province of Prince Edward Island, Trudeau warned the public that these tariffs would harm both American consumers and businesses while undermining the North American trade pact.
Trudeau also pointed out that the tariffs could raise prices for American goods, including Canadian exports like Prince Edward Island Potatoes, which contradicts Trump’s promise to reduce grocery costs.
Instead of gaining praise for meeting Trump, Trudeau faced backlash on X.
“Canadian PM Justin Trudeau meeting with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Justin Trudeau mocked Trump behind his back. I hope President Trump concedes nothing to this fraud at their meeting. Justin Trudeau Should Resign Before Destroying Canada,” one X user posted, along with the photos and videos of Trump and Trudeau during the dinner.
