French President Emmanuel Macron revealed that part of his strategy against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) is “pissing off the unvaccinated” by limiting their freedoms. He added that his government will continue this tactic until those refusing the COVID-19 vaccine relent and agree to get the shot.
The French leader made this admission during a Jan. 4 interview with the Le Parisien newspaper. “As for the non-vaccinated, I really want to piss them off. We will continue to do this to the bitter end. This is the strategy.” Macron added that he vows to keep the pressure on the unvaccinated “by limiting, as much as possible, their access to social life activity,” he said.
According to Macron, only “a small minority” was “resisting” the country’s calls for vaccination.
“How do we reduce that minority? We reduce it – sorry for the expression – by pissing them off even more,” Macron said. “I am not going to put them in prison, I am not going to forcibly vaccinate them. [Instead, I will] say to them: From Jan. 15 – you can no longer go to a restaurant; you can no longer go for a drink; you can no longer go for a coffee; you can no longer go to the theater; you can no longer go to the cinema.” (Related: Macron says French citizens who want to shop, dine, travel or worship must get vaccinated for covid.)
Macron repeatedly referred to the unvaccinated as “non-citizens” throughout his Le Parisien interview. “When my freedom comes to threaten that of other people, I become irresponsible. An irresponsible person is no longer a citizen,” he explained.
The French president was not the only official who had strong words for the unvaccinated. Prime Minister Jean Castex told lawmakers in the French Senate on Jan. 5: “Who outrages [and] fractures the nation? Who drives the nursing staff in our casualty departments to make drastic ethical choices? It’s a tiny minority. To be a citizen is also to have obligations.”
French government spokesperson Gabriel Attal, meanwhile, said during a Jan. 5 press conference: “Who pisses off whose life today? Who ruins the lives of our nursing staff who’ve been mobilized for two years, snowed under in our intensive care units to save patients who today are largely unvaccinated? It’s those who are opposed to the vaccine.”
Several personalities inside and outside the country took to social media to denounce Macron’s remarks during his Jan. 3 interview. The incumbent French president is seeking a second term in the country’s presidential elections in April 2022. Two of his rivals grabbed the opportunity to condemn his statements.
National Rally candidate Marine Le Pen accused Macron of “persisting in division” and seeking to “make the non-vaccinated second-class citizens. Valerie Pecresse of the Let’s Be Free political party said she was “offended” by the president’s remarks. “It’s not for the president of the [French] Republic to separate good from bad French people,” she said.
Sixty-five-year-old Sophie, who is unvaccinated, said Macron’s language was counterproductive. “The more you get threats like that, the more people will resist,” she told Euronews. The sexagenarian had intended to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but hesitated over safety concerns. Outside France, Macron’s remarks against the unvaccinated did not sit too well with some personalities.
Urologist and Newsmax medical contributor Dr. David Samadi tweeted on Jan. 5 that “governments are getting bolder every day with his rhetoric,” in reference to Macron dubbing unvaccinated people as non-citizens.
Paul Joseph Watson of Summit News also tweeted on Jan. 5: “Macron’s comments are completely beyond the pale. Really vile stuff. In a just world, his election hopes would now be toast.”
