An 18-year-old woman has sued a hospital in California for subjecting her to a double mastectomy procedure when she was only 13 and experiencing “gender confusion.”
The Epoch Times reported that Layla Jane, whose given name is Kayla Lovdahl, filed a lawsuit against Kaiser Foundations Hospitals and Permanente Medical groups. Doctors who work for or are affiliated with the nonprofit Kaiser Permanente, including psychologist Dr. Susanne Watson, were also named as defendants.
“Jane is seeking damages for her pain and suffering; additional money for medical expenses and costs of the suit covered,” the report said. Lawyers for the plaintiff filed the suit in the Superior Court of California.
The suit reads: “Defendants did not question, elicit or attempt to understand the psychological events that led [Jane] to the mistaken belief that she was transgender. Nor did they evaluate, appreciate or treat her multi-faceted presentation of co-morbid symptoms.” (Related: Detransitioner Chloe Cole to sue doctors who forced her to undergo “gender-affirming” procedures.)
Charles LiMandri, one of the lawyers representing Jane, blasted the defendants for carrying out “ideological and profit-driven medical abuse” when they prescribed the girl puberty blockers and hormones, and subsequently removed both her breasts surgically.
Center for American Liberty (CAL) CEO Harmeet Dhillon said in a statement: “Kaiser continues to engage in the quackery of subjecting innocent children to irreversible sex mimicry treatment, including drugs and surgery, without informed consent.” CAL is also representing Jane in the lawsuit.
“The medical providers responsible for [Jane’s] case, along with countless others, have substituted woke ideology for medically accepted standards of care – including lying to and manipulating vulnerable patients and families.”
Both Watson and Kaiser Permanente did not respond to requests for comment.
According to Jane, people she met online influenced her that she was a boy at the age of 11. She then told her parents about this, prompting them to ask for guidance from doctors.
Three doctors visited by Jane’s parents advised against cross-sex hormones, but she was eventually referred to several physicians who prescribed both puberty blockers and hormones. The girl underwent a double mastectomy within six months.
According to the suit, a single 75-minute session with Watson served as the basis to prescribe the hormones and puberty blockers. The decision to allow Jane’s breasts to be removed followed a separate 30-minute session with plastic surgeon Dr. Winnie Tong.
But Jane said she didn’t feel better after the surgery, suffering nerve damage and other issues. She has since de-transitioned – resumed identifying as a girl – a decision that has made her happy.
The complaint noted that the lack of therapy and outlining of possible side effects from the surgery means the doctors did not provide the plaintiff with informed consent. Rather, the defendants argued that Jane’s “gender dysphoria” would not resolve unless she proceeded with having her breasts surgically removed.
Recounting her ordeal to the Epoch Times, Jane shared: “Nobody – none of my doctors – tried anything to make me comfortable in my body, meaningfully pushed back or asked questions. They only affirmed.”
“The law says children aren’t mature enough to make serious decisions that could have long-lasting consequences – like getting a tattoo; driving with friends; drinking alcohol; smoking cigarettes or even voting. So why is it acceptable for 13-year-olds to decide to mutilate their body?”
